Rocking the Night Away

Midnight stillness,

Shuttering sigh.

Weeping almond eyes search mine,

Seeking shelter from monster dreams.

Pink jammies, hide curling toes,

Warm body heavy with fatigue

Cocooned in the love

Of a handmade quilt.

Rock, rock, pat

Rock, rock, pat

Is our night duet,

In the big brown chair,

At the bottom of the stairs.

Almond eyes drift close,

Drool replaces tears.

Even breathing slowly sinks

Into the deep pool of sleep.

Rock, rock, pat

Rock, rock, pat

I stay a few minutes more.

One last dance in the midnight dark,

Keeping watch for monster dreams.
